Something to Ponder

Men's figure skating took your breath away? I don't usually disagree with Dom but here im going to have to object. Men's figure skating is obscenely ridiculous. What I don't understand is why they have to be so flamboyant? Has there ever, EVER been a non flamboyant mens figure skater? What is it about figure skating that brings out this flair??

Now don't get me wrong, i have nothing against being flamboyant. But Im stunned that an entire sport can be that flamboyant. Is it a rule? Is it a requirement that there costumes are composed of 90% glitter?

I guess the question I am really getting at is can you ice dance and not look flamboyant? I think its possible. I think that it might be the next great thing for the sport. Someone who pushes the boundaries and moves the sport forwards. Minus sequins. Now that I would be impressed with. So I challenge the entire figure skating community. Can you do it? Only time will tell.

Compare & Contrast

I was Google Video searching for an episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and I randomly came across this clip of Juliet Weybret, an adorably talented girl who does a surprisingly great* cover of Taylor Swift's 'Should've Said No':

This girl is 16 years old, and accordingly you'll find covers of the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers (along with more Taylor Swift) on her YouTube page. But sister girlfriend writes her own songs too, and sure they're all semi-cliched songs about star-crossed teenage lovers and stuff, but honestly, I listened to them and ended up nodding my head like yeah.

Anyway, if you though she was good, go listen to a few more of her tunes on MySpace or YouTube, become a fan on Facebook, or follow her on Twitter. I always feel that people like this should be encouraged.

All of this to say that this talented girl's video jogged my memory of another YouTube-published cover of the same song. I'm going to go ahead and let it screech for itself:

For some background-- this sad little person is 19 years old and I'm pretty sure the poor thing takes herself dead seriously. Perez Hilton found the clip a few months ago and it has since gotten over two and a half million hits on YouTube. She takes this to mean that she should continue to film and post her musical stylings on the internet. Yeah, I wish I was kidding.

* Yeah, that sentence probably has too many modifiers in close proximity to each other.

What do you think Lady GaGa's natural hair looks like under all those wigs?

I'm asking because really, I'm just at a loss.

Young Eager and UNPAID

Some food for thought. If you don't follow TIME magazine on Twitter this was something they posted today. Kinda makes me feel stressed. I only have one internship under my belt. Am I doomed? I know plenty of people who still don't know what they want to do with their lives who are decades older than me. Are we going to have to intern forever? How do they expect recent grads who have to pay for loans, health insurance, etc. to work for FREE? Ugh. LIFE.

Some things I don't understand

There has got to be a better way to dispense shampoo*. Think about it, has anyone in the history of hair washing ever successfully used all of the shampoo in the container? I feel like every time that I'm just at the end of a bottle, there's at least two lurking tablespoons of Paul Mitchell coating the inside walls or stuck in the shoulder-- never to be used. Destined for waste. 

Though my concern is one both legitimate and troubling, the governing shampoo body will never take it into consideration. Why? Because due to the inherent wastefulness of present shampoo packaging, I have to go buy a new bottle two tablespoons sooner than I would with a more efficient dispenser. So they're making bank and I'm left in an emotionally exhausting battle of wills against a plastic bottle, hoping against hope that I might salvage a few extra teaspoons of Tea Tree Scalp Treatment. 

Garbage.

*This also applies to lotion. And ketchup. 

I've always wondered about this

In his 80's classic, I'd Do Anything For Love, Meat Loaf says: 

 "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that. No, I won't do that"

My question is as follows: What, precisely, is that?

Tim Burton should be sainted.

I know I've talked about it before, but just to update you, the trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has been released. It gave me goosebumps. I'm not even exaggerating. Not even a little .

Incidentally, does anyone else feel like Tim Burton's life is one really long acid trip? I can't find any other explanation for the stuff he comes up with. 

Two questions:

• Have you ever noticed that the seasoning on Cooler Ranch Doritos is so intensely red and green that it looks like Christmas confetti? If not, you should really look into it-- it'll freak you out, man. 

• I would argue that Doritos and gummy* candy are two food items that are delicious by virtue of two factors: flavor and texture. How is it that these two excellent treats become disgusting if you swap one of these components? For example, imagine if gummy candy tasted like Doritos. Gross. Or what if Doritos were cherry flavored? Woof.

*Note: Upon reflection, I believe that this property is apparent in all types of candy, and not just the gummy variety. I cannot imagine a circumstance under which I'd want a Nacho Cheesier flavored after dinner mint.

Weirdly Plausible

I was presented with an interesting theory today: Michael Jackson was offed by Iran.

The decidedly fishy results of their presidential election, combined with Neda Soltani's tragic death, put Iran in somewhat of a sticky PR situation. So the Ayatollah Khomeini calls up Ahmadinejad and says,

"Listen, dude... we have like, a lot of political unrest to sort out and we'd like to do it in a timely fashion. So we're going to need you to go ahead and create some sort of diversion over there so that no one notices as we get rid of anyone causing trouble over here."

"Ok...but how do we distract the entire world?"

"Beats me. Kill Michael Jackson or something."

Maybe they thew Farrah Fawcett, Billy Mays, and Ed McMahon in the mix for dramatic effect?
